Transition is a common theme in Dre’s work, with Decisions being a key example. It’s hard not to wonder if the young man is looking back to return to the place where he came or if he has the intention to turn again towards the rising sun. There is a sense of conflict as the eastward sun brings new opportunities and forward progress but the cost of leaving behind that which is known may be more than one can bare. So, we meet this young man in a moment of pause, possibly contemplating the sensibility in moving forward. What is he doing this all for?

The challenges of forced duality take center stage in this work. Here we see a young man shedding a tear as he engages with this mask. Maybe he just recently realized will be a part of his life for the foreseeable future. Or maybe this is a truth that he has known for a while, but the pain never went away. Maybe the child subject reflects the helpless feeling that all men feel when reminded of the need to keep the mask close at hand.

This modern interpretation once again leverages concepts of transition and time as we encounter the subject somewhere between life and death. However unlikely, the subject still bears a full bloom, demonstrating it has something to offer or teach us. Maybe it is to remind us of the circumstances that led to his end, of an undeniable truth or of something crucial to our survival. Or maybe all three. What hidden truth lies within the muted history of the not so long ago past?
